The Charter Review Commission invites San Marcos citizens to participate in its upcoming meetings to review and consider changes in the City Charter.

The commission will hold a public hearing on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Room at City Hall , 630 E. Hopkins Street.

The task of the commission is to study the city charter, something like the equivalent of the municipal government’s constitution, and recommend changes to the city council. The council will then decide which issues to place on the ballot for a public vote in November.

The Charter Review Commission is chaired by Kathy Morris, with Scott Cook, Bucky Couch, Sam McCabe, Sam Montoya, Arthur Taylor and Bill Taylor as members. The city council appoints a Charter Review Commission every two years to examine the charter, which establishes the City’s form of government, the duties and responsibilities of the city, and many procedures used for budgeting and ordinance-making.

Copies of the city charter are available for public review at the San Marcos Public Library. The charter, along with the entire city code, is also available on the Internet under Quick Links on the City’s web site at www.ci.san-marcos.tx.us.

The Charter Review Commission plans to hold its regular meetings on Thursday, April 24 at 3 p.m. and on Thursday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m.
