Vickers, Morales, lead Bobcats at NCAA track regional

Texas State senior pole-vaulter Rebekah Vickers and junior thrower Kemuel Morales were the top finishers for the Bobcats at the NCAA Midwest Regional Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Lincoln, NE.
Vickers posted an 11th-place finish after clearing 12 feet, 6 inches on her first attempt in the women’s pole vault. Morales also finished in 11th place with a mark of 53 feet, 7 ½ inches on his first attempt in the men’s shot put, while Katie Hanie had a 13th-place showing in the women’s discus after posting a throw of 155 feet, 10 inches on her first attempt.
Jonathan Ochoa also finished 13th in the men’s javelin with a throw of 202 feet, 4 inches on his second throw. The Texas State men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out their 2008 season with Casey Cummings placing 14th in the men’s pole vault and Ikenna Obonna registering a 16th place showing on the final day of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
Cummings cleared the opening height of 16 feet, 1 ¼ inches on his second attempt in the pole vault, while Obonna had a legal jump of 48 feet, 3 ¼ inches on his third attempt in the men’s triple jump.
Ashley Austin had a mark of 17 feet, 10 ¼ inches in the women’s long jump, while Kevin Aje posted a time of 10.83 seconds in the second heat of the men’s 100-meter dash.
The Bobcats advanced no competitors to the NCAA national meet to be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, IA. Qualifiers were limited to the top five finishers in each individual event, the top three relay teams and six-to-eight competitors in each event based on season-best performances.
