Leaders hope a new pedestrian bridge over the San Marcos River will become a focal point for the city park system and passing automobile traffic on nearby Hopkins Street.
The $616,400 footbridge is part of a public works project to connect the sidewalks where they previously ended near the city’s Parks & Recreation department building and the Activity Center. The bridge is supposed to be completed in August.
“I think it’s going to be one of San Marcos’ most recognizable landmarks,” said council member John Thomaides.
Most of the sidewalk work has been completed as well as design, engineering and environmental work for the abutments on both sides of the riverbanks. The Hopkins Street bridge over the river is too narrow to add sidewalks, officials said.
