STAFF REPORT

A standoff between law enforcement officers and a weapons and narcotics suspect barricaded in his house ended without injury at about 2:15 p.m. today.

At about 10:40 a.m. today, agents from the U.S. Marshals and the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms bureau tried to enforce a search warrant at 300 Joe Robinson Road in the Creekside Landing Subdivision near Kyle. A man, who officers have not identified, exited the house but Fernando Martinez, 36, fired a shot inside the house, causing federal agents to call for backup from the joint San Marcos and Hays County SWAT, said Lt. Leroy Opiela, the sheriff’s office spokesperson.

By about 1:45 p.m., Opiela said, the suspect had cut off communication and officers used tear gas to press his surrender. He exited the back of the home bearing a weapon and was arrested after officers used bean bag projectiles and a Taser to force him into compliance.

He is being treated for non-life threatening wounds at a local hospital, Opiela said. The spokesperson said additional charges are likely to result from the standoff.
