The girls basketball team at Hays High School used its usual defensive effort for an easy 56-24 win at Lehman Friday night to go 2-0 in District 17-4A, while Lehman fell to 1-1. San Marcos lost it’s district opener Friday night to Del Valle.
As the girls high school basketball teams in District 17-4A open district play this week, including a meeting tonight between Hays and Lehman, the boys teams still have a week of tuning up.
The high school basketball season is in swing with a new wrinkle. For the first time, San Marcos, Hays and Lehman will compete against each other in the same district with permission for San Marcos to join District 17-4A.
Following the predictable Hays trouncing of Lehman Friday night at Bob Shelton Stadium, the future is actually fairly bright for Lehman, a young team that improved this year and looks forward to incorporating its winning freshman class. For Hays, the future is more immediate, starting with a home playoff game next Friday night against Magnolia.
As they line up tonight for their last game of the regular season, the Hays Rebels and Lehman Lobos really aren’t rivals. Instead, they’re football teams going in very different directions.

The Lehman Lobos suffered their worst loss of the season Friday night, 63-7 at Lockhart, as the Lions put themselves in position to make the playoffs with a win next week.
